Information About the Individual Artists

Roy Malan, concertmaster and solo violinist of the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra and a member of the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, studied in London with Yehudi Menuhin and at the Juilliard School and Curtis Institute, where his teachers were Ivan Galamian and Efrem Zimbalist. Since 1979 he has been on the faculty at the University of California, Santa Cruz, having also taught at Ithaca College, the San Francisco Conservatory and Stanford University. Mr. Malan is founder and co-director (with pianist Robin Sutherland) of the Telluride Chamber Music Festival. His concert tours have taken him throughout this country and Europe, Latin America and Australia, and in recent seasons included acclaimed appearances at Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, in Los Angeles and Paris. His recordings may be heard on the Genesis, CRI, Newport and Intrada labels. The author of a biography of Efrem Zimbalist, Mr. Malan was bequeathed the great violinist¹s collection of bows. He plays on a violin made by the Australian maker, Smith, ca. 1960.

Scott Woolweaver, violist, graduated with distinction from the University of Michigan School of Music before moving to Boston for graduate work with Walter Trampler. He was a founding member of the Boston Composers String Quartet, which won the silver medal at the 1993 String Quartet and Chamber Music Festa in Osaka, Japan, and with the Quartet, performed across the United States and Europe. A champion of 20th century music, he has performed numerous new works for the viola, many of which were written for him.

He has also been a member of the Vaener String Trio, the New England Piano Quartette, Boston’s Handel & Haydn Society, Boston Baroque, and has taught at Tufts University and the University of Massachusetts. He plays a Johan Georg Thir viola made in 1737.

Susan Freier attended Stanford University as a Ford Scholar, graduating with degrees in both biology and music (with Distinction). There she studied violin with David Abel and received coaching from members of the Francesco Trio. While studying with Zvi Zeitlin and Sylvia Rosenberg at the Eastman School of Music she co-founded the Chester String Quartet and won the Cleveland Quartet Competition. The Chester went on to gain top prizes at the Munich International, Portsmouth (England), Evian (France) and the Chicago Discovery Competitions before joining the faculty at Indiana University in South Bend as ensemble-in- residence. Returning to Northern California in 1990, Ms. Freier joined the Stanford String Quartet and the Stanford University faculty. She has been a participant in the Aspen, Grand Teton and Newport Music Festivals and can be heard in recordings on the Newport Classics, Stolat, Pantheon, Laurel, Music and Arts, and CRI labels. She performs frequently with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players and is currently an artist/faculty member of the Rocky Ridge Music Center. She plays a Gofreddo Cappa violin, made in Turin, Italy, ca. 1700.

Cellist Stephen Harrison is a graduate of the Oberlin College Conservatory and the Boston University School for the Arts (with Distinction). Former principal cellist of the Opera Company of Boston, the New England Chamber Orchestra and the Chamber Symphony of San Francisco, he co-founded the Stanford String Quartet with violinist Andor Toth in 1983. The SSQ performed throughout the United States, in Europe and in Asia, was heard on National Public Radio, the BBC, German State Radio and the Netherlands State Radio, and recorded for the Laurel and Music and Arts labels before departing Stanford to become the Ives Quartet. Mr. Harrison continues to teach on the Stanford faculty. As solo cellist of the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, he has toured internationally and recorded on the Delos, CRI, Music and Arts, New Albion, New World and Newport Classics labels. Mr. Harrison has been on the faculty of the Pacific Music Festival and is currently an artist/faculty member of the Rocky Ridge Music Center. He plays a Vincenzo Panormo cello made in London, ca. 1790.
