General Information On April 4-5, 2000, Delores Stevens and the Ives String Quartet became the first chamber music ensemble to have their performance of the Brahms Pinao Quintet RECORDED, MIXED and MASTERED AT 96kHZ/24BITS. The recording took place in Zipper Auditorium at the Colburn School of Performing Arts in downtown Los Angeles. With high-resolution Euphonix equipment capturing 16 channels at 96 kHz/24 bits and five locked off cameras trained on the performers, one of the most well-known chamber music works became the first project for AIX Records. About the Recording Approach This recording is NOT an attempt to "document" a live recording of the Brahms Piano Quintet, but instead an exploration of high-resolution recording coupled with aggressive 5.1 channel surround mixing. While both an "audience" and "stage" mix are included on the disc on the DVD-Video side, it is the DVD-Audio 96 kHz/24 bit tracks encoded with Meridian Lossless Packing [MLP] that elevates the listening experience well beyond a traditional CD or even a live concert. You are placed in the middle of ensemble and hear the sound of each performer coming from all directions. This recording brings chamber music recording to anothe level. Hear for yourself and let us know what you think. About the Disc This DVD disc has two sides with digital data on them. One side, the DVD-Video side, contains the complete work with multiple camera angle video, alternate mixes ["stage" and "audience"], DTS and Dolby Digital audio tracks and a comprehensive array of informational screens about the piece, the composer and the performers. There are photos from the sessions, pictures of Johannes Brahms and even a recording of the composers own voice! About the DVD-Audio/Video Format Part of the DVD-Video side contains a comprehensive explanation of the DVD format [including DVD-Audio, DVD-Video and DVD-ROM], digital encoding methodologies [AC-3, DTS, PCM and MLP], instructions on how to setup your 5.1 channel surround system, test tones and channel IDs and demonstrations comparing stereo mixes to 5.1 mixes. Everything you want to know about DVD and 5.1 channel surround is on this disc.
