General Information Chopin was the first composer to write "Ballades" for solo piano. In these works the lyricism and virtuosic figuration of the instrument is brought to new artistic heights. Listen to a wonderfully sensitive artist, a first class Steinway Model D 9-foot instrument in a glorious performance hall [Zipper Auditorium at the Colburn School in Los Angeles] and experience the extension of sound provided by the 5.1 channel surround mix. Imagine the sound of 16 microphones strategically placed in stereo pairs within the instrument and around the hall. Choose your point of view - either fully immersed in the sound or from the "best seat in the house". Recording a piano is one of the toughest challenges for a recording engineer, this DVD captures all of the sound and then some... About the Recording Approach This recording is NOT an attempt to "document" a live recording of Anita Chang performing Chopin, but instead an exploration of high-resolution recording coupled with aggressive 5.1 channel surround mixing. While both an "audience" and "stage" mix are included on the disc on the DVD-Video side, it is the DVD-Audio 96 kHz/24 bit tracks encoded with Meridian Lossless Packing [MLP] that elevates the listening experience well beyond a traditional CD or even a live event. You are placed in the middle of ensemble and hear the sound of the instruments coming from all directions. The dynamic range and fidelity offered by the 96 kHz/24 Bit source recording makes this recording come to life. About the Disc This DVD disc has two sides with digital data on them. One side, the DVD-Video side, contains the complete performances with multiple camera angle video, alternate mixes ["stage" and "audience"], DTS and Dolby Digital audio tracks and a comprehensive array of informational screens about the project and the performer. There are photos from the sessions and complete technical information about the recording. About the DVD-Audio/Video Format The DVD-Video side also contains a comprehensive explanation of the DVD format [including DVD-Audio, DVD-Video and DVD-ROM], digital encoding methodologies [AC-3, DTS, PCM and MLP], instructions on how to setup your 5.1 channel surround system, test tones/channel IDs checks and demonstrations comparing stereo mixes to 5.1 mixes. Everything you want to know about DVD and 5.1 channel surround is on this disc.
