General Information If you're a guitarist, you know the name Laurence Juber. In his former life, Laurence was invited by Sir Paul McCartney to become a member of Wings. In fact, he has had the honor of performing with all of the Beatles except John Lennon. Over the past decade or so, he has been become one of the top finger-style acoustic players in the world. His compositional and arranging skills are as strong as his virtuosity. Joined here with Domenic Genova and Steve Forman, LJ expands pieces in a bluesier/jazzier direction...a perfect balance especially for a high-resolution, 5.1 channel surround project. If you've seen the Nitty Gritty Surround disc (the one that walked away with Best Additional Features and Best of Show at the First Annual Surround Music Awards), you'll appreciate the depth of features and production value of this disc. We've gone all out. Beautifully shot video, multiple camera angles for a performance and guitar lesson, extensive photo gallery and biography, interviews, rehearsal footage, printable TAB notation, web connections and so much more! And the sound of the disc has established Guitar Noir as a true reference disc! This is the project that has won multiple Surround Music Award nominations, topped the DVD Etc list of "The 20 Best Sounding Multi-Channel Releases" AND won the 2005 "DEMMY" award from the Consumer Electronics Association for "Best High-Resolution, Multi-Channel Track". But it's the sound that transcends believeability! The richness of LJ's signature series Martin guitar extends deeper through the acoustic bass and is contrasted with lots of ultra-frequency metallic percussion tastefully played...and captured using 96 kHz/24-bits. The sound on this disc is as perfect as I know how to make...I hope you agree. About the Recording Approach This recording is NOT an attempt to "document" a live recording of Laurence, Domenic and Steve, but instead an exploration of high-resolution recording coupled with aggressive 5.1 channel surround mixing. AIX Records uses no EQ, dynamics processing or artificial reverberation...everything you hear is as the musicians played it. Both "audience" and "stage" 5.1 mixes and a PCM 96/24 bit stereo mix are included on the disc on the DVD-Video side. However, it is the DVD-Audio 96 kHz/24 bit tracks encoded with Meridian Lossless Packing [MLP] that elevates the listening experience well beyond a traditional CD or even a live event. You can chose to listen from the middle of ensemble and hear the sound of the instruments coming from all directions or place yourself in the "best seat in the house". The dynamic range and fidelity offered by the 96 kHz/24 Bit source recording makes this recording come to life. About the Disc This DVD disc has two sides with digital data on them. One side, the DVD-Video side, contains the complete performances with multiple camera angle video, alternate mixes ["stage" and "audience"], DTS and Dolby Digital audio tracks and a comprehensive array of informational screens about the project and the performers. There are photos from the sessions and complete technical information about the recording. About the DVD-Audio/Video Format The DVD-Video side also contains a comprehensive explanation of the DVD format [including DVD-Audio, DVD-Video and DVD-ROM], digital encoding methodologies [AC-3, DTS, PCM and MLP], instructions on how to setup your 5.1 channel surround system, test tones/channel IDs checks and demonstrations comparing stereo mixes to 5.1 mixes. Everything you want to know about DVD and 5.1 channel surround is on this disc.
