Making the Most of the DVD-Audio Format...Means Long Production Cycles!
The inclusion of so many information screens, interview video, bonus materials /
and multiple mixes adds a lot of extras production time to AIX releases

Another Sunday evening and I've been busy most of the day editing interview video, writing biographies, laying out screens and qc'ing audio mixes in the hopes that the upcoming HE 2004 show in NYC will include our three new titles. I'm particularly proud of these three new projects because the quality of the music is spectacular, they production value of the video has improved once again and because they include so many interesting extras. Where else would you learn that Grant Geissman is one of the country's foremost experts on MAD magazine and EC Comics. Or how about being able to view all of the album covers that Dean Torrence issued with his partner Jan Berry of Jan & Dean. Check out the extensive interviews by Eric Rigler and Ruben Blades onBad Haggis. I've added some recent footage from the "Celebration of Life" held to honor the memory of Jan Berry on Dean Torrance and his Surf City Allstar Band. Grant Geissman Quintet project also scheduled for release in late May. If you're coming to the show, please come by our booth and say hello.

AIX Records Garners Top Two Spots In Top 20 List!
DVD Etc. magazine selects 3 AIX Records products for "Best Multi-Channel Audio Discs"

Check out page 48 of the May/June issue of DVD ETC. magazine for a listing of the "TOP 20 MULTI-CHANNEL AUDIO DISCS EVER!" According to author Felix Martinez, 3 out of the top 9 DVD-Audio products that he selected were AIX Records titles. In fact, including all formats (SACD too), AIX took the number 1 and number 2 slots as well as slot 14...pretty good against competition from Telarc, WB/Rhino, Pentatone and Channel Classics. No other independent label had more products in the list and no other label scored as high as AIX! The number one slot went to Laurence Juber's Guitar Noir. Felix's comment was "The Definitive recording of an acoustic guitar performance - stunning!". Our Stravinsky & Ravel orchestral release of The Firebird Suite and Bolero was number 2 with the following comment, "Hearing the "firebird" at reference volume is a profoundly moving experience." Finally, Zephyr - Voices Unbound was selected in the 14th position. Felix noted "The naked voice transports the listener in this stellar recording." Thanks very much to Felix and DVD ETC. magazine for recognizing our work and giving us the Gold and Silver!

A Few Words From A Supporter At Meridian

Speaking as someone who has listened, and frequently does listen, to Mark's recordings on a great system or two (as well as my rather ordinary home setup), I can confidently say that I regard them as some of the best recordings I have ever heard. And while I would certainly say that the coding space he uses (ie DVD-Audio) is so much more extensive than human hearing capabilities that it can happily be regarded as transparent, there is more to it than 144dB dynamic range from DC to lots and the other technical benefits of the distribution medium.

I think Mark's attention to detail in the making of the recordings, from gear right down to choice of venues and the mastering, plus excellent performers and performances, is as important as the medium. I also think that few people go so many extra miles to produce a product with such massive added value with things like video and multiple mixes. Yes, I would like him to do some Ambisonic recordings, but other than that you really can't do any better. And best of all, Mark is putting his money where his mouth is and actually releasing records.

I am extremely happy to see him doing so well having taken such a gamble. I believe people do notice the difference. I can play his stuff to people who know nothing about audio and it makes their hair stand on end. Recording is partly about communicating effectively to the listener, and I think Mark's disks do just that.

AIX Records - Start Here Sampler

First off I don't consider myself to be an expert at understanding bit-rates, formats and whatnot. I'm not a professional musc critic or reviewer, I'm just an average everyday person who loves music. That aside I have just discovered the world of DVD-Audio and only have about 7 discs in my collection. I heard about your company and what you do from the hometheaterspot.com forums and decided to give your discs a try. As I put your "Start Here" disc in I had a feeling that it would sound slightly better than my other DVD-A's but I was dead wrong. It didnt just sound a little better - it puts my other discs to shame! Your mixes have brought a new level of "live" sound to my system that I had never conceived to be possible. Whatever you are doing in mixing these DVD's keep it up. This is EXACTLY what the DVD-A format needs - a company like yours to prove that this format is the superior one and that recorded music really can sound live. I'm sure this is just one of many many letters of praise and thanks that you have received: they are well deserved. Thanks again, and I have a feeling my DVD-A collection is going to be getting a lot more discs from AIX.

Regards,

Hagoth Lelepali

PS I've already told just about everyone I know about how great AIX DVD's sound and I've only had my discs for one day.
