In the summer of 2001, AIX Records Founder and Chief Engineer Mark Waldrep, Ph.D. traveled to Bucharest, Romania with nine road cases of state-of-the art, high-resolution audio equipment to record the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra and chamber groups from its ranks. The intention was to capture first class performances of familiar classical repertoire using his unorthodox method of recording…that of using many stereo pairs of mics and high-resolution recording equipment. This DVD-Audio disc is among the releases from those recording sessions. The tracks were recorded live without an audience in the Atheneum in downtown Bucharest, Romania.

Romanian pianist Matei Varga was born on October 29, 1980, in Bucharest, Romania. After having graduated from the “Dinu Lipatti” High School of Music (Bucharest 1999) and the National University of Music (Bucharest 2004), he is currently a student at the Mannes College of Music, New York (MM in Piano performance). He has studied with Sandu Sandrin, Ana Pitis and Ioana Minei, and is now registered within the piano class of Professor Pavlina Dokovska. He has also followed master classes with pianist Raoul Sosa in Canada, Belgium and France.

Matei Varga’s constant performing evolution has been rewarded with several important international awards, among which we shall only mention the most significant: 3rd Prize at the “Maria Canals International Music Competition”, Barcelona, Spain, 2004; runner up and winner of a Special Prize awarded by Elisabeth Leonskaja at the “Prix Vendôme 2003” Piano Competition (Vienna, London, Lisbon); 2nd Prize at the “Cidade do Porto International Contest”, Porto, Portugal, 2002; 2nd Prize at the “George Enescu International Piano Competition”, Romania, 2001.

Matei Varga has also participated in several music festivals, among which the most important are: the “George Enescu” International Festival (Bucharest, Romania, 1991), “Festival dei Due Mondi – 2002” (Spoleto, Italy) and “Festival de Sintra” (Portugal, 2003).

AIX Records’ premium DVD-Audio/Video have two sides. The first side in an interactive DVD-Video disc and the other side is a DVD-Audio disc [which requires a DVD-Audio capable machine to play it back].

The sound of this recording brings this incredible musician into your listening space. The HD-Audio surround mixes immerse you in the musical interplay with full range frequency response and dynamics.
