Luis Conte is the percussionist to some of the biggest names in commercial music including James Taylor, Phil Collins, Jackson Browne, Madonna, Sergio Mendez, Ray Charles, Pat Metheny, Beck, Shakira, Sade and Herp Albert. In this first Latin HD-Audio recording, his talents and those of pianist David Garfield and bass player the late David Carpenter are brought to life through the magic of 96 kHz/24 Bits and 5.1 channel surround sound. The music is mixed to maximize the individual timbres and musical lines. Bob Stuart, founder and president of Meridian Audio, described the sound as “incredible” and went on to say this was one of the best recordings he’s heard. The difference is in the use of new technology, a strict adherence to purity of signal and a willingness to experiment with instrumental placement. Finally, a chance to hear real HD-Audio with performers that know how make wonderful music.

Born in Santiago, Cuba, Luis spent the first 15 years of his life soaking up the rich musical heritage of “El Son” and Carnival. “Life in Cuba is all about enjoying life, and music is central to that lifestyle,” Luis says. “Music is almost like food to Cuban people.” While immersed in the music of his native Cuba, Luis also developed a passion for Rock & Roll, R&B soul music, jazz, and the Beatles.

At 15, looking for freedom, Luis emigrated to Madrid, Spain. He soon had another opportunity to travel, this time to Hollywood. In California, Luis stayed with a cousin and attended Hollywood High School, playing guitar in numerous rock bands throughout his teens.

After high school, Luis met John Monteallegre, who reunited him with Cuban drums at LA City College. By the time he was 18, Luis was intensely interested in drumming and took every opportunity to play and to learn, drawing his inspiration from a deep source of rhythm absorbed during his youth in Cuba.

David Garfield’s mission statement is “I make music.” And “make music” he does, as a world-renowned keyboard artist, producer, and composer. Be it jazz, rock, funk, or world beat – he is the creative force behind the production of many internationally acclaimed recordings.

After studying music at Ohio State University, the late Dave Carpenter launched his professional career playing with three giants of jazz: Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson and Woody Herman. Most recently, Carpenter had been in drummer Peter Erskine’s trio, which also included pianist Alan Pasqua. A veteran of the Woody Herman and Bill Holman big bands, he also worked with Bill Perkins, Jack Nimitz, Herb Geller, Herbie Hancock, Jack Sheldon, Al Jarreau, Bill Cunliffe, Jan Lundgren, Terry Gibbs, Buddy DeFranco and Richard Stoltzman, to name a few.

In as great demand in Los Angeles studios as he was in clubs, Carpenter has a list of recording credits as long as both of your arms. He performed on over two hundred recordings, and had dozens of television, film theme and soundtracks to his recording credit.

Sadly, Dave died of a heart attack in June of 2008. The music world lost a truely wonderful musician and person.++AIX Records’ premium DVD-Audio/Video have two sides. The first side in an interactive DVD-Video disc and the other side is a DVD-Audio disc [which requires a DVD-Audio capable machine to play it back].

The sound of this recording brings these incredible instrumentalists into your listening space. The HD-Audio surround mixes immerse you in the musical interplay with full range frequency response and dynamics. Check out how great Latin jazz can sound! When asked at trade shows which discs are among my personal favorite, I always include The Latin Jazz Trio.
